I developed my website and blog because I was frustrated with how visitors thought Palm Springs and Coachella Valley were only about retirement, playing golf, lying in the sun, and drinking craft cocktails. Thus, I started writing about places I was discovering in the area. When you look at some of my blogs, I think you will understand there are a variety of attractions and places to explore. About two weeks ago, I got a personalized email asking if I would like to experience a massage at The Spa at Desert Springs in Palm Desert. With a road trip coming up, I immediately thought this might be the perfect activity to schedule after a week-long road trip. Last week, the time had come. I was working on emails and kept watching the clock because I didn't want to miss my 3:00 p.m. appointment. Seriously, I do not know what possessed me not to go earlier and relax in the spa before the allotted time. Besides, the resort is a gigantic complex, and I had no idea where the spa was located. I set out on this adventure. I call practically everything I do an adventure, for when one keeps her eyes open, one will notice beautiful things happening around you. The key is to look for the positive things happening. Pulling into the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa Fortunately, the Marriot's signage is superb. I wound my way past the pink flamingos wading in the pond lined with tall palm trees. The signs directed me past the main building, a parking lot, and down to the end of the complex. I smiled because I was running late and was concerned about parking. No problem, there is plenty of parking steps away from the entrance. Checking into the Luxury Spa in Palm Desert I walked into the entrance and immediately felt calmer, for the greeter assured me there was absolutely no problem and all was well. I was escorted to the hallowed area of this luxury spa in Palm Desert to the women's locker room. What struck me immediately was the walnut-colored wood paneling that graced spaces wherever I looked. With my locker assigned, I changed into the provided white robe. If the attendant asks if you want a slide shoe, say yes, for you will be going through wet areas at the pool. Plus, you can wear them in the shower. I discovered I should have asked for a size smaller than I usually wear—a subtle nod, but it felt good--maybe my feet weren't so big after all. Time for a Massage at the Spa Immediately after walking out of the locker room, my masseuse was waiting for me, and we walked down the hallway graced with beautiful wood paneling and apparent new carpet. As I lay down on the table, my anticipation of letting some stress go made me sink even deeper into an appreciation for this experience. A lavender scent permeated the room. For one hour, yes, it was all about me, and I loved every minute of it at the luxury spa in Palm Desert. Time to Explore the Spa Since I hadn't had time to tour the spa before my massage, an attendant showed me the many experiences I could have while luxuriating in this spa. Love saunas? I have never been to a spa where there was a very hot sauna, one you have experienced before, and my favorite is the lavender sauna. Watermelon and Zinc-infused water was refreshing and made you think you were having a craft cocktail without the alcohol. An inside hot tub was steps away from the sauna. Take a step through the door to the outside, and the co-ed pool, used only by spa clients, is waiting for you. Lounge chairs in royal blue and umbrellas were so inviting, but time was running out, for the spa closes at 5:00 p.m. Lounge Areas at the Spa I chose to head to the quiet room. I stretched out on the lounge and sipped more infused water as I listened to the soft music playing in the background. The women next to me took a nap; like me, I believe they felt so safe, relaxed, and very pampered. Next to this lounge area, long subtle colored, gold sheer drapes provide a refuge with comfy sofas hugging the walls and lined with pillows—the perfect place to pull out the book you have been wanting to read. No cell phones are allowed. Need a Bite to Eat When You are at the Spa? The bistro offers healthy food options. If you want to eat poolside, place your order with an attendant. Time to Leave the Spa The shower is roomy and stocked with body wash and hair products when ready. Wrap yourself in a white plush towel and take your swimming suit to the spin dryer. After your shower, creamy, fragrant lotions add to the experience. Checking Out of the Spa Since I was a newcomer to the spa, I was pleased. Dawn, the manager, asked me if I wanted to see a couple more spaces. Again, we walked down the hall, and she opened a beautiful space for rent for ten people. There was a large comfy sofa, a large spa tub, and a patio with tables and chairs if you desired to order a meal from the bistro. The private attached patio has ample space to stretch out and appreciate the California weather. Our second stop was really a couple's space. Two massage tables and a giant tub are there waiting for their guests. Imagine this: they light candles, you can have champagne, etc. Romantic? You bet. When I was driving home, not only was I relaxed my aches were substantially reduced. I hadn't been noticing how my body was crying out for attention. AND I couldn't wait to get home and call my friends about the adventure and discovery I had made this afternoon at the spa. One of them I knew would undoubtedly want to include it on her schedule the next time she visited me. Many of you followed my quasi-vacation to the Northwest, specifically Bellevue, Vancouver, Washington; Gearhart, Oregon; and Astoria, Oregon. My 17-day odyssey included laughter, hugs, exploration of new areas, and fabulous food. My transportation included: Airplanes, which I can happily report were on time and had no lost baggage, a scenic train ride, and a road trip. Now that I have recovered from Travel Fog, it is time to focus on the many articles queried and approved by publications before I left on the journey. Meanwhile, my brain dances with new possible queries, like writing about The Coffee Girls, a place hidden away on an Astoria, Oregon pier and frozen in time. Planning a Visit to Bellevue Washington The planning for the trip began when my friends in Palm Desert, Sheri of California Caftans, and her husband, David, came home from a date. I took care of their dogs that evening. When they came home that night, they took out their calendar and asked when I was coming to stay with them in their Bellevue, Washington, home next summer. We settled on the end of August. Arrival in Bellevue the beginning of Exploring the Washington and Oregon Attractions The August day came, and I flew into Everett Field, Washington. Immediately upon being picked up, David began a tremendously informative tour through easily accessible areas of the Boeing manufacturing complex. Believed to be the largest one-level building in the world, sliding open doors revealed planes in various stages of construction as far as the eye could see. I got out of the car at their home and started breathing in the fresh evening air on the patio surrounded by evergreen trees. I sensed it was going to be a very good six days. Indeed, it was relaxing, filled with laughter, good food, and winetasting. I am grateful to Visit Bellevue for organizing some of our adventures. Amtrak Train Ride to Vancouver Washington The bus ride from Everett to connect with Amtrak was filled to the brim. With its ornate cornices and snow-white interior, Union Station in downtown Seattle was a joy to see again. The train ride was filled with beautiful scenery, following along the Columbia River to my destination of Vancouver, Washington. My friend of 30-plus years, Molly Silva, picked me up and ushered me into my room in her beautiful new condo, again with a lovely patio surrounded by tall evergreen trees. Reconnecting with Friends in Vancouver Washington Vancouver had been my home for 26 years before I moved to Palm Springs 10 years ago. I was thrilled to have breakfast with friends, coffee, dinner, and just quick conversations that resulted from people seeing my posts on Facebook. Checking into the AC Vancouver Waterfront Hotel I was asked to review the AC Vancouver Waterfront Hotel through my travel writing work and was granted a two-night stay. This beautiful hotel perched on the Columbia River's edge open in June of 2022. I quickly noticed the little things, cocktail cubes embossed with AC, Tug the robot ready to serve, a square-shaped toilet, and a spectacular view from my room overlooking the river. Again, more information will come out in my articles about this casual yet luxury feel hotel. Road Trip to Gearhart Beach With the journey of Washington and Oregon attractions on the Washington side on Highway 4, we marveled that there was no traffic, even on a holiday weekend. This destination was truly a vacation for me, an arranged stay with a dear friend of 30-plus years. Her former beach house has now become her permanent residence, and the gardens surrounding it flourish under her green thumb. We made morning trail walks to the ocean beach, dined in the area, and reveled in Mary's knowledge of history and places surrounding the beach towns of Seaside, Cannon Beach, Astoria, and Gearhart. As a trustee of the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, her knowledge and tour brought to life the essence of the ships' perilous trips over the world's most dangerous bar where the Pacific Ocean and Columbia River meet. Checked into the Cannery Pier Hotel and Spa in Astoria Oregon On this trip, I was assigned the great duty of reviewing the Cannery Pier Hotel and Spa on the ocean's edge in Astoria, California. On a hunch, we arrived mid-morning and were thrilled we could check into our room with a full ocean view. So much to share with you in the future. Let's say, for now, it was terribly hard to pry ourselves away from this luxurious yet casual, romantic hotel, newly opened after an entire remodel in April 2022. Trip Through Portland Oregon on the Way to Lake Oswego Oregon My final planned stop was lunch in Lake Oswego. I was hoping we would have lunch on my friends' deck, which I knew was surrounded by evergreens, so I could get one last time to enjoy the incredible weather of the Northwest that followed me for the entire time of my journey. Paula and Scott did not disappoint. Greeted with Prosecco and a toast to long friendships, we thoroughly enjoyed a shrimp salad accompanied by fresh garden tomatoes. Let's say all had a good time. Flight Home on United Airlines An early-morning flight on United Airlines from Portland was made stress-free by my friend Pennie's ride to the airport. With no delays in Portland or San Francisco, where I changed planes, arrival was on time for a terrific greeting from Palm Springs friend Rob. Final Part of the Journey With a suitcase in hand, I opened the door to my condo. All was well, even though temperatures had hovered over 110 degrees a fair amount of the time I was gone, while I enjoyed perfect weather in the Northwest. For many reasons, seeing Washington and Oregon attractions was a magnificent trip. I am thrilled I get to relive the adventure and will share more detailed descriptions of the places mentioned above. Now, it is time to settle in, tends to my dog-sitting duties, and write my promised articles for various publications. When you travel to Palm Springs, California, here is something you may want to look into to plan your activities. The growth of entertainment venues in Coachella Valley took a great leap when the Acrisure Arena was announced. It accommodates 10,000 people for the hometown, Firebirds hockey team, and Live Nation entertainment productions. Last night I had the opportunity to attend an event with my neighbor to see Tony Orlando. If you prefer a more intimate space, I suggest you look into The Show, located inside the Agua Caliente Resort Casino and Spa. It is easily accessible from Highway 10 in Rancho Mirage, on Bob Hope Drive. A three-quarters circle is filled with 2,057 comfortable seats, with no poles to see around, and state-of-the-art screens allow you to see performers' facial expressions no matter where you are seated. Three Special Aspects of the Tony Orlando Show I Enjoyed at the Aqua Caliente Resort Casino 1. The Realness of Tony Orlando at the Aqua Caliente Resort Casino Tony walked out, projecting an ah-shucks demeanor, and started with, "I am so happy to be back in the Valley, where I owned homes for many years." He shared how he owned houses and sold them for what he thought was a great deal of money. He recently learned a house he bought for nearly $500,000 and sold years ago now recently sold for $23 million. The audience applauded when he said he intended to make the Valley his home again. What was so endearing, Tony did not shy away from the lows in his life. The stories he shared between songs were interesting and kept you engaged, and wanting him to regale more the stories that comprise the man performing before you. One sensed his 78 years had brought him to a place where he wanted to share: If you have a dream, do not give it up, but don't expect it will always be easy. 2. Obvious Love and Pride in His Band We tend to look at a band and clap when the entertainer introduces them by name, and that is it. I have never seen an entertainer showcase his musicians as Tony did this evening. Not only did you learn their name and background, but each musician became an intricate part of the evening. We learned how his brother begged their dad to buy a piano so he could someday accompany Tony on his concert tours. It has now been 27 years of them working together. Captain, an 18-year-old working with Tony for the first time, brought the house down by playing and singing a Neil Simon song. I couldn't help but think how incredible it was for Captain and Tony to make sure the younger generation felt welcomed in this genre. Still, another segment introduced a gentleman on the keyboard and guitar. He had a severe stroke five years ago. This night his ability to sing in the voice of Cher, Willie Nelson, and Prince was incredible. His rendition of Purple Rain had the crowd swaying with the beautiful visual of the stage bathed with floating purple lights. The other two guitarists and the drummer, with extraordinary vocal abilities, were also showcased in ways I had never seen before. Tony's pride in working with them was incredibly evident, for they, too, were the subject of Tony's stories about their lives, career, and pride in helping him project his music to the world. 3. A Performance to Be Remembered At the Agua Caliente Resort Casino With Tie a Yellow Ribbon as his opening song, he immediately had his audience singing with him. Then, not missing a beat, he turned the performance into an event honoring our war heroes. He went through all the wars with the lights up, starting with WW II. Then as he went through the different wars, the standing veterans visually illustrated the many people who have fought for our freedom. He pointed out we have few WWII veterans alive, but we should honor those still alive. Then he asked the lights to be turned off to honor all those who sacrificed their lives for us. I'm pretty sure there was not a dry eye in the house. While he focused on his songs, the band constantly stretched him with new renditions of other popular groups' music during the 70s. With no intermission, his smile grew as the evening kept the audience singing along with him and tapping their feet. As we filed out of the auditorium, the conversations around us revealed that we were not the only two that found this to be an extraordinary concert, much of it because of the focus on humanity. Feeling so fortunate, I had the opportunity to go to the show in the first place but had no idea I would be touched on so many levels. We agreed he had done everything right. Yes, he has had a few years to perfect his craft. Yet, his words of sincerity and belief that people should follow their dreams exuded from every pore in his body. What a gift he gave to us all, and yes reminded us perhaps, we can all be a little kinder to each other. Ready for Palm Springs day trip? Well, here's one I recently took and highly recommend. Plan a trip to The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, California. Then take the road less traveled home through Fallbrook, California. A little over 100 miles from Palm Springs, The Flower Fields of Carlsbad have started to bloom. Through Mother's Day, approximately 50 acres of ranunculus bloom and thrive on the slanting hill less than five minutes from the Pacific Ocean. Preparing for a Palm Springs Day Trip to the Flower Fields Be sure to get your tickets online, for no tickets are sold at the gate. You will also be asked what entry time you want. My suggestion is to arrive early for two reasons: 1. I highly recommend you purchase your entry tickets for early in the morning when the crowds are less. Also, this internationally known attraction is popular so that the early bird can move around the grounds so much easier. 2. Wear a hat and suntan lotion, for the radiating rays of the sun are stronger than you realize. Your Arrival As you walk through the gates, the brilliant colors of the blooming flowers cause you to stop and gaze over the scene spreading out before you. The breathtaking view begs you to capture the setting on your camera but wait. There is so much more to explore. Your journey has just begun. If you have family members who have a challenge walking, you will want to purchase tickets to ride the wagon through the fields. Don't worry. They have stops where you can get off and get up close and personal with the blooms. Once the ride is over, you will want to walk through the various sets built by volunteers and enriched with flowers planted by the Master Gardeners. It is no wonder these fields are a desired and popular sight for weddings after hours. Talk about an Instagrammer's dream. There is more to explore, but I just wanted you to get a sense of these gardens and encourage you to plan a trip there. Take the Trip Less Traveled Home If you love Backroads, here's a suggestion. I put Sage, California, into the GPS, for I saw on the map that it would take me home and through Fallbrook without much freeway driving. (Still smiling, Sage is literally a T in the road.) At the T, turn left and enjoy the country scenes with ranches and vista views. Arriving in Fallbrook Keep driving through the new area of town and look for the sign that says Historic Downtown. Once I parked the car, I was across the street from the Chamber of Commerce and the Arts Center. Delightful staff at the Chamber gave me some pamphlets and urged me to go to the Arts Center next door. Art Center Watercolor Juried Exhibit To say this exhibit is extraordinary is an understatement. It includes 104 paintings with so much detail you find yourself peering more closely at the painting to see the minuscule details. Only watercolorists who had won awards at major watercolor societies in the US could enter this juried exhibit. Meeting one of the buyers of one of the paintings who just wandered into the Fallbrook Arts Center was enlightening. Realism and contemporary forms of subject matter were well represented. I wound my way through the maze of partitions holding these treasured works of art. If you love art, particularly watercolors, I suggest call them for exhibit details or go online to see their schedule of exhibits. More than one person mentioned not to be missed is their Galaxy of Glass exhibit scheduled for the fall. Returning Home As I parked in my carport, I smiled. My idea that morning to come home on a less traveled road proved to be one of great fun and learning. I believe that if you want an exciting life, plan something yet, remain flexible. Feel like you have been home for a long time? You want to get away but are not sure where to go. Here's an idea. Grab a friend, head out to West Riverside, California, and explore the California Citrus State Historic Park. I'm not sure where I heard this place existed, but when I did, I knew I had to go there when the citrus fruit would be ripening. Once I connected with my travel buddy and confirmed the date, we waited in anticipation for the day to arrive. Unfortunately, the only way to get there was via the freeway. Google Maps guided us on the 62-mile drive there. Once we turned off the freeway, we noted industrial parks and residential areas were leading to the main entrance to the park. The Site of the Historical Park There were many locations where you were high-up and could take in the vastness of the 300 acres planted in citrus trees. Rolling hills, unobstructed views of distant snow-capped mountains, and a glorious Southern California sun-filled sky immediately brought our senses alive. They assured us we had made the right move taking ourselves on this journey. It is designated a historical park by the State of California because it contains The Gage Canal. To gain the title to 640 acres, Matthew Gage built 11.91 miles of the canal between 1985 and 1889 from Santa Ana River, which still supplies water to local citrus ranches. Tour of the Orchards The Ranger met us in front of the Visitors Center, and we were off for the next hour. Online the times for Ranger tours are listed. We had opted for the 11:00 a.m. one, which turned out to be just the right one for us. (The tour and Visitors Center are totally handicap accessible. The trails are wide and can accommodate a wheelchair.) Some of the things we learned: · There are over 1,000 varieties of citrus fruit. · This park has 70 varieties of citrus. · Bees do not pollinate the trees. · Citrus trees cross-pollinate when next to each other. So, no two years will the fruit taste the same if there is another kind of citrus planted next to it. The list above is just a teaser. You will learn so much more. Visitors Center The building that houses the Visitors Center was one of the old packaging sheds. Walk around the space, read the display panels, and watch the two movies. They will open your mind to even more appreciation of the citrus fruit industry. You will be surprised what you learn about the history of oranges. Did you know oranges became of real prominence in California when food sources were sought to feed the influx of gold miners? Gift Shop Cliché, but true, the Eliza Gift Shop is charming. Floor-length tablecloths draped on the tables filled with merchandise, much of it made from oranges. A fine collection of books about the orange industry is available, and refrigerator magnets are touting the great designs once used on orange crates. Getting Ready to Walk Out the Door of Visitors Center Since we were on the tour, we were handed a bag weighing five pounds full of a variety of citrus fruit. So good and sweet. Let's just say it was opened before we finished our road trip. Touring the Grounds We got in our car and started driving. Discovering the site for weddings caused us to get out and explore more. Complete with a gazebo, a large building to hold a reception, and citrus trees surrounding the entire area. There is more than enough ample parking. If you come to the park and have a group of people or fancy having a picnic lunch, picnic tables are scattered through this beautiful area with a view of the mountains. Lunch Time We didn't know about bringing a lunch, so we were starving when we were through exploring the park. We asked the lovely woman in the Gift Shop where we could go to have a satisfying meal. She immediately recommended Olivia's for Mexican food. We headed there, thanks to Google Maps, found our table, and ordered our go-to Mexican food. The Chili Rellenos did not disappoint, nor did the cactus salad. Again, we tried to find an alternative route rather than heading back on the freeway. However, there appeared to be no alternative route. Alas, it was time to head home. Final Thoughts on the Day Years ago, I heard Tony Robbins say; you should spend a day in an industry that you know nothing about to help open your creativity. While exploring this industry, we asked questions, learned, and safely learned about a place that played a significant role in developing California's economy. After three years plus, dog sitting and house sitting in Palm Springs, California, I have a few thoughts to share. Dog sitting pairs perfectly with my travel writing career, though it would not be ideal for everyone. Let me Get Something Off my Chest First Your animals are your children in every sense of the word. If you have a dog, you feel, and rightly so, this animal is indeed a member of your family. It is a massive responsibility of the dog sitter to make sure this four-legged member is fed, exercised, and keeps the routine Jasper is used to while you are gone. With that being said, I cannot fathom why people willingly turn their homes over to strangers, not pay them anything, and expect to come home and find everything in their home in perfect shape and their animal as happy as the day they left. And the other side of it, with all the responsibility, why would a house sitter take care of animals for free? When an animal is involved, your schedule and ability to explore revolves totally around the animals every hour the owner is gone. What does dog sitting involve? In my case, I have elected to dog sit only if the owner wants me to stay in her home. My writing is too interrupted if I stop two or three times a day to get in the car, drive someplace, walk, feed the dog, and then come back to my home. Step 1: After the initial contact, either through a referral or an ad, a phone call takes place to see if it is a good match. The dog sitter supplies references with phone numbers. Step 2: The dog owner calls up to see if the dog sitter can come over and meet the animals. Step 3: I have yet to meet a dog I didn't like, and dogs sense it, so the owners quickly see I would be good with their dog. Step 4: Dates are set, and then there is a home tour. The owner will often go over the dog's routine, food needs, etc. However, I smile, for they will go over it, have everything written down in detail, and go over the routine again before heading out the door. Remember, these are their children. Step 5: A check-in by phone a week before to make sure both are on schedule for the client's getaway. Step 6: The professional dog sitter will ask how long a dog may be left by himself. It varies from 2 hours to about 3.5 hours. Thus, you know the window of time you can leave the premises. Step 7: I arrive one-half hour before the client is ready to take off. Jasper now recognizes me, and last-minute details about the mail, watering plants, or expected deliveries are discussed. Step 8: I am now in charge. Step 9: Walks for the dog take place, and here in Palm Springs, the dog sitter must keep a keen eye out for coyotes, who are presently seen in many of our neighborhoods. Step 10: Feeding on time. You follow the directions of the owners precisely. You learned earlier if the dog can have any food, popcorn, or anything besides his prescribed meals. In any case, you are to be ready to accept those sad, watchful eyes while you eat and do what the owner has requested. Step 11: Bedtime, follow the routine and do precisely what the owner told you to do. I learned I do not sleep well with a dog in my bed, but I tell the owner beforehand, and we make the adjustment, and the dog does too. Step 12: No matter if it is 4:30 a.m. or 7:00 a.m., if a dog needs to go, you need to drag your body out of bed, release the house alarm, and head outside. Step 13: Take a picture of Jasper and send it to the owner. Sometimes I pretend it is Jasper talking, or I use that text to update the owner on anything she needs to know about Jasper or the house. Then the Day Begins All Over Again Recently, a major storm was coming. I secured several outdoor items and covered the furniture with a tarp. During the storm, the tarp blew off. I grabbed the furniture pillows, saving them from getting soaked. The key to the mailbox reminds you to bring in the mail. If it is an extended stay, you oversee watering indoor plants or pots scattered throughout the yard. If trash is to be taken to the street on a particular day, make a note to yourself to do it. When you use an item for cooking, be sure to notice where you got it and put it away in the same place. You have experienced what it is like not to find something in its assigned place. Why wouldn't you do this same thing in a place you are staying? Meanwhile, you are watching to make sure the dog isn't outside when the Pool man comes or the landscape people, for there is a chance this one time they may just have left the gate to the street open, and Jasper sees an opportunity to explore the neighborhood on his own. By now, you have figured out which toy Jasper loves, and a rousing game of tug of war makes the for exercise for both of you. At feeding time, carefully read the directions and hide any medication the dog may need in the format prescribed by the owner. It may be wrapped in a piece of turkey or just buried in this food for the day. The Owner Will be Arriving Take out the trash in the kitchen and replace the bags. Pick up the dog's toys that may be strewn around the house due to your play adventures. Strip your bed if they do not have a housekeeper and empty the refrigerator of food you have leftover. Typically, I bring all my food but am delighted when there are snacks or a special dessert I can have for a change of pace. Since I have been updating the owner on the status of Jasper and the house, we talk about when it is okay for me to leave the premises and Jasper. I have learned most owners prefer to walk into their own homes after a journey and not chit-chat and instead play with their animals. When I walk out of the house, I want it to look like it appeared when I walked into it before the owner left. Okay, I'll admit I give the dog a treat as I say goodbye to him. In the last text, I ask the owner to tell me when she is in her home, for I feel like I am on duty until I get that final text. Once I get the text, I confirm I have seen it; thus, I am officially off duty. It isn't Easy as you Might have Thought It is a huge responsibility. I didn't even mention the anxiety caused by a dog suddenly getting sick, having a seizure, or hurting himself playing. Your sleeping patterns will more than likely be interrupted. Jasper doesn't know that you like to get up at 6:00 a.m. instead of 4:30 a.m., and you function much better after you have had your cup of coffee. He needs to go out now. Flexibility is necessary. Long ago, I learned not to plan any of my own activities the day after a dog sitting gig is supposed to end. Frequently, the owner's plans change. It may be an extended meeting, but more usual is their plane connections didn't work, and they won't be home until the next day. Thus, you have another overnight stay. Yes, there is great variety. All the dogs have different personalities, and most of the time, they will test you to see if they can break the household rules. The homes reflect the owners' personalities, and I can assure you that no two homes have the same TV controls. I am thankful my two paths have come together. It is also interesting that I chose to write the first blog of the year, combining these two paths by using my talent to write about my dog and house sitting segment of my life. About nine years ago, I started going to Los Algodones, Baja, Mexico, for dental work. I knew I needed crowns, so I asked my Palm Springs Neighborhood Group on Facebook what place they would recommend. When seven people recommended Sani Dental, I took the leap and made a reservation. A friend also needed to get work done, so she agreed to take this three-hour road trip with me. See my blog What do you Expect on Dental Adventure to Mexico. Sani Dental has two hotels connected with their organization. I have always stayed at the hotel mentioned in my blog but decided I wanted to make this trip an adventure, so I chose to go to the Hacienda Los Algodones, a four-block walk from the dental office. Fast forward to this past week. I decided to go by myself for I thought I might need a crown, which would require me to stay two nights, and friends couldn’t get away. I arrived a half-hour ahead of time (Los Algodones is Arizona time). The dental office happily stored my suitcase, and I was off to the routine procedures. It turns out; I just needed a deep cleaning of a molar because of a slight nagging ache and a small filling. Previously, I learned that it is best to have a good book with you, for there are often long waiting times between seeing specialized doctors. However, I was done and could still head home if I wanted this time. Instead, a sense of disappointment filled my consciousness, and I didn’t want to go home yet. I love this town, its people and admittedly the food. Decision Time I reclaimed my suitcase and sat down in the newly remodeled waiting room to check messages. Instead struck up a conversation with a couple waiting to start the process. They were lovely, and I found out they were staying at the same hotel I would be if I stayed. They had flown in from North Dakota and were first-time visitors, wanting to be assured they had made the right decision to come here. I enjoyed our conversation. It was then I decided I was going to stay. Well, I did want some of the coconut shrimp from my favorite restaurant and Chile Rellenos. Lunch in Los Algodones I was not going to leave without having coconut shrimp at my favorite restaurant Mi Casa es Su Casa. I walked in and smiled as I was greeted by the same staff that has been there for years. Stephanie escorted me to the outdoor balcony. A young woman was sitting there working on her computer. I greeted her, and we were deep into discussions before we knew it. She and her boyfriend were from Phoenix; he was having work done at Sani Dental while she worked on her website promoting her organic deodorant. Her boyfriend, who recently arrived from Germany, joined us about an hour later. After his girlfriend introduced me, he said, I need to share something with you. I sat in the dental chair, looked up at the wall. There were the credentials of the dentist who would be working on me. His credentials were from the best dental school in Germany. The next thing we knew, we pulled out photos and showed each other places from our hometowns. And now, I have no pain anymore on top of all of that. They were a lovely couple and great fun to meet. However, I want to point out the dentists at Sani Dental are credentialed from some of the best institutions in the world, many of them in the USA. In addition, Sani Dental is part of the American Dental Association. Checking into my Hotel The clinic runs a shuttle between the two offices and the two hotels. So, the shuttled was called, and I was indeed on a new adventure. The turn into the hotel was down a dirt road, with The Wall looming in the distance. We turned the corner, and I broke into a smile--lying before me was a cheerful yellow hotel, with a courtyard complete with a tall three-tiered Mexican fountain. Check-in was smooth, and I was led up the stairs inlaid with tiny elongated gray stones to my second-floor room. My room was immaculate, and the bathroom had a large corner shower. I was no longer questioning my decision to stay. Drinks in the Courtyard I unpacked a bit. Then I peered through my window and saw the people enjoying animated conversations in the courtyard. I grabbed my sweater just in case the evening turned cooler and headed down the stairs. Sitting together were three women drinking wine. I asked them where they got the wine, and they pointed me in the direction of the onsite restaurant. Since I was in Mexico, I ordered a margarita delivered to my table. The couple I had met in the dental office arrived, and I invited them to join me. The conversation went from dental work to a discussion about racism in the United States to the joys and attractions in the area. Before we knew it, we were talking to the women at the adjacent table--two sisters supporting their sister having implants. One of the sisters was from Goodyear, Arizona, Kansas City, Missouri, and San Felipe, Mexico. Then I noticed one woman had the shirt on with a heart and the initials KC, my initials. I asked what it stood for—she replied Kansas City. Then I told her they were my initials. That was the end of that conversation, and we moved on to other topics. I smiled as I went up to my room and was surprised there were English-speaking programs on TV. I settled in but opted to turn the TV off and read my engrossing novel on my Kindle. A Fresh New Day I had decided I would leave that morning but would detour to Yuma six miles away to get the lay of the land. Hopefully, next trip, I could stay and explore their attractions. As I went down the stairs, I noticed two women I met the night before having breakfast. One of them called me over. She said, Kathy, I would like you to have this. It was the t-shirt she had worn the night before with my KC initials. I just stood there in absolute amazement and was thrilled to have it. When I started writing this blog, I said, you meet the nicest people in Los Algodones. Now I know they will even give you the shirt off their back. Oscar's in Palm Springs took the pandemic time to revamp. Their thoughts turned toward ways to attract a wide variety of audiences and entertainers to downtown Palm Springs. If my recent experience with an Intimate Evening with Priscilla Presley is any indication, I'd say they are on the right track. I saw their announcement that Priscilla was going to be in Palm Springs. Since there are so many rumors surrounding her, I thought it was an excellent opportunity to hear what she says about her life in the past and present. Since I couldn't find anyone who wanted to go with me, I decided the day before I would go by myself. It turned out to be the very last ticket, so I took that as a good omen. Oscar's Venue Check-in was easy, and many people chose to have dinner before the Presentation. Thus, the courtyard was filled with beautiful, draped tables and under the crystal-clear desert sky. The balcony above was utilized for seating guests. (Note to me—I'd love to sit there in the future.) The lighting was beautiful, and curtains on the outside of the building glistened, helping to make one feel exceptional as I was escorted to my seat with a perfect side view close to the stage. I ordered my cocktail, Old Fashion so that I could sip during the Presentation. While sitting there struck up a conversation with a woman next to me. A peruse of the audience reveals a mature woman wearing a beautiful brightly colored caftan with a handsome man in a tuxedo. Later in the evening, the woman was introduced as Margaret O'Brien. She is one of the last surviving stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. Conversation with Priscilla Presley Sitting on a chair on the stage, Priscilla started by sharing about how she met Elvis. Remember this now a lovely mature woman of 74 who started dating Elvis at 14 years of age. Her parents had great concern. At her dad's request, she invited Elvis to their home, and she was convinced he would say no. Instead, he said, Can I bring my father? The visit was arranged. Without Priscilla in the room, she could hear the laughter and bonding going on between Elvis, her father, and Elvis's father, Vernon. The rest is history about the beginning of the courtship. It is true. Elvis helped create her persona. He would go with her to buy the clothes she wore. She proudly stated, when we were viewing photos of the era, That was my natural hair. Elvis was a very private person. Thus, he had sort of a posse around him most of the time. While he loved performing and his audience, he wanted to be alone with trusted people in his private time. They were all men except for Priscilla, who was always part of the Elvis inner circle. Palm Springs Connections We call it the Honeymoon House, and I had been under the assumption it was where they had just spent their honeymoon. It turns out they lived there for a couple of years. They moved into the other house in Little Tuscany only because Rona Barrett and photographers got so brazen, and they wanted to get away from them. She said once they moved to the second house, they spent much more time in Palm Springs. It was a place where they had many good times. She spoke of Palm Springs fondly and was happy to visit again. She was a little stunned by the changes in the town from when they lived here. Video and Photos were used throughout the Presentation Priscilla hadn't seen many of them in years, so at times, emotions radiated in her voice as she began to talk. The video of Dancing on the Stars caused her to state; It was one of the most challenging things I have done in my life. I prayed I would be voted off. After each viewing, she freely shared her thoughts and what was going on when the videos were taken. Rare and real emotions were shared with the audience. There was a moment when I am sure there was more than just me with a few tears in my eyes. Priscilla said Lisa Marie has a beautiful voice. Her regret was she never had the opportunity to sing with her dad. With the help of technology, a video of Elvis and Lisa Marie appeared before us performing together. Unfortunately, I forgot the song's name because I was so caught up in how beautiful it was to hear their voices blending. I am just hoping the video will be posted somewhere so more people can witness a moment that will not, unfortunately, appear in real life. Priscilla Life Today Priscilla said I will always love Elvis. Maybe I loved him too much, for I could not continue to be around him. It was not stated explicitly, but I got the sense that it was the women around Elvis and the drugs. All our lives, we remained friends, connected about Lisa Marie, and talked often. I spoke to him the day before he passed on. Today, she is a successful businesswoman. She is very involved in the continuation of Elvis's legacy through the operation of Graceland, which is the second most visited home after the White House. While she is enjoying her acting career, she has no plans to be an actor again. She is happy, not dating but surrounds herself with some great male friends and looks forward to continuing to help carry the mantel of Elvis's Legacy. It was an informative, delightful evening in Palm Springs. I came away admiring Priscilla Presley, who I previously did not know much about her, for my focus on Elvis overshadowed her. If you are Eisenhower Health Center and it is your 50th-anniversary celebration, what do you do? You plan an event like no other and make it one of the most memorable evenings for attendees. On November 1, 2021, the gate opened at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and the party started. Women dressed in beautiful gowns and men in tuxedos walked through the 5-red rose-covered stars, representing the 5-five-point logo of Eisenhower Health Center. A photographer was there, capturing the attendees in their evening's splendor. Then they were handed a glass of champagne, and headed to the lounge area adorned with sofas and barista tables draped white tablecloths. More champagne? No problem, the champagne carved ice station was nearby. The weather cooperated, and sipping champagne, and dining on hearty canapes outside while you mingled was the main scene of this part of the evening. However, tents adorned with beautiful flowers and tables were available if you wanted to sit inside. The Concert Set-Up Tables were set upon on the Courtyard floor and draped with floor-length tables in front of the stage. Areas of the stadium were covered and provided more of a sense of intimacy, and Stadium seats for the concert were covered with blue celebratory Eisenhower Health cushions. On each side of the stage, giant screens projected close-ups, resulting in no one having a bad seat. Of course, the Suites had their projection screens capturing the nuances of the evening. The Concert Jay Leno put the audience in a relaxed mood. He was grateful to be in entertaining a large audience once again. (As a side note, I met him outside before the event, introduced myself, and told him the women I was with were from the Auxiliary. This resulted in a broad smile, "Congratulations.”) Not sure I have this in the order it happened, for it was such an incredible and fast-moving 2.5 hours, I'm still a little starstruck. David Foster came on stage and starts playing some of his award-winning songs. It became evident that David would be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening when he said we had a special guest that couldn't be here in person tonight. He introduced Kenny G on Zoom, and the two of them performed together. As David introduced Andrea Bocelli, you could immediately tell these two were not only friends but admired and appreciated the talent of each other. Of course, the audience sat mesmerized while Bocelli began to sing. The next surprise, Bocelli sang a song with his 10-year-old daughter. I sat there in total rapture, thinking about my granddaughter close to that age, admiring their talent and how perfectly their tones blended. Followed by another surprise: Bocelli introduced his son, who came out to sing with him. Bocelli left the stage, and his son's stunning voice filled the stadium. David Foster introduced Pia Toscano, a voice being compared to Celine. Hard to put into words the gravity and strength of her singing talent. She now travels with Bocelli on this concert tours. At one point, David said we are a divided country, but I trust this arrangement I have written will bring us a little closer together. Pia came out and sang "God Bless America." The entire stadium was on its feet, and people held each other's hands or shoulders. (You couldn't possibly listen without having tears in your eyes.) I'm not done yet. Throughout the evening, Katherine McPhee came out to sing accompanied by David on the piano. They are now husband and wife, and I am happy to report they are now residents of The Vintage in Coachella Valley. If you don't remember, she was on American Idol….we will eliminate the number of years ago. She is also a gifted songwriter. The evening closed with an encore by Bocelli, which certainly did not disappoint the audience. As we gathered our belongings and found our way to the exit, the reality started to sink in; we had experienced a once-in-a-lifetime concert. The organizers of Eisenhower Health Center have much to be proud of for the execution of this event appeared flawless from the outside. The weather was perfect under the desert sky, so no one needed a wrap to protect them from the desert air. As I drove the 16 miles home, I reflected on my life. Indeed, I have seen and done some fantastic things in my lifetime, but this ranks in the top five of all-time favorite things I have been able to witness in person. Is it the neon signs? The giant lizards made of mosaic glass that guards the entrance? Is it the ambiance when you come out at night? First of all, let me say, the Mary Pickford Theatre is actually in Cathedral City, located in their town square. I did not want to confuse you, the visitor, for more than likely you told everyone you were flying or driving to Palm Springs. You were unaware there are nine cities that are often collectively called Palm Springs by outsiders. (I’ll be writing a blog on this shortly) The Mary Pickford, as we affectionately call it, is my go to theater for a number of reasons. · It is about eight miles from my home in Palm Springs. It always feels like I am off on adventure when I head, down valley (Locals call driving south down valley) · Parking is very easy. · The giant lizards on both sides of a small pond can’t help but make you smile. A closer look will have you marveling about the artistry of the person who actually created them. I’m not sure the Barcelona lizard has anything on these two magnificent creatures. · Like most theatres, you can buy your ticket online or head to the box office. You also select your seat at the time of purchase. · Armed with your ticket, you walk into the grand lobby. Your eyes wander to the ceiling, the arches and the staircase lined with trailing ivy. Don’t forget to look up behind you and see the large window over the entrance. · They have a year-long Popcorn Pass for $39. Admittedly, this year-long pass for popcorn serves my popcorn addiction well. · With your assigned seat, you head toward your almost full-reclining chair. · For those so inclined, the theatre has capability for both 3D and DBox. I believe you are getting the picture. This theatre is beautiful and comfortable with an array of amenities, food and drinks that will satisfy the pickiest attendee. My ideal time of day to attend is about 4:30 p.m. when it is daylight. Then when I come out at the night the town square is a fairyland of beautiful colored lights, the theatre’s neon lights makes you feel like old Hollywood and the palm trees are bathed in lights. You might want to include this fun place in your plans for your stay in Palms Springs. This is a breakfast and lunch place where you will be able to mingle with our relaxed locals. Pinocchio's is located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. So what is the appeal? Patio dining is one of our favorite pastimes in Palm Springs. Since it sits right on the sidewalk, the ability to people watch is satisfying in itself. However, we locals like it for its good food, at reasonable prices. Well, okay, there’s another reason. They have bottomless champagne for $4.95. Add a bit more if you want orange juice to turn the champagne into mimosas. They do have a 90 minute rule about how long you can stay. It is very casual, and relaxed. How Pinocchio's Became a Reality Before she came to the United States, Desiree Hunen-Gerhardt, owned and operated several hotel restaurants in Germany. One of them had significant acreage and was often the site for events serving 450 people. She discovered Palm Springs when she visited friends in 1995. Then she started looking around for a place to start a restaurant in Palm Springs. In 1997 she bought the Hacienda. She owned and operated it between 1997 and 2005. She took a year off before she found herself anxious to get back to the restaurant business. When interviewing Desiree, she said, When I lived in Germany, my favorite restaurant in that town was called Pinocchio. When I bought the restaurant in 2007, it was call, 'More than a Mouthful.' She laughingly told me, I desired to find a hole in the wall off the beaten track, and it was at that time. When asked what her guiding philosophy is, she replied, I wanted Pinocchio’s to be a staple of Palm Springs where locals come to meet. wanted it to be happy place where no politics or negativity is found. It seems the Desiree has accomplished her goal. I noticed that when I have out-of-town guests and they want to a real Palm Springs resident breakfast, my first thought is to take them to Pinocchio’s. No wonder the place is getting busier. By the way, I have never had a visitor who didn’t enjoy the food, the atmosphere and the positive energy in this charming Palm Springs restaurant. As I was about to leave Desiree said, Look around. Notice there is a bottle of champagne on most of the tables here. I think we have are accomplishing our mission for people are here to enjoy themselves while having a hearty breakfast. Now that I know the story, I am even more enthusiastically recommending to you this absolutely charming Palm Springs restaurant. Palm Springs Insider Guide Tips Look for the umbrellas on Tahquitz Canyon Way, literally between our two local major streets, Indian Canyon Drive and North Palm Canyon Drive. The key is to get there before 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for it fills up rapidly. They do not accept reservations. There is free parking in the back accessible from Indian Canyon Drive if you can't find a space on major streets.
